Spell checkers very basic, and do their obvious function. They will take any group of words, and check the spelling of those words against a preloaded dictionary. Most spell checkers also will highlight misspelled words as you are typing them.
Spell checkers work by comparing strings against strings in a library. The string is any combination of letters, whether it be a noun, verb, adjective. Most libraries also include abbreviations, acronyms, and many other formally recognized figures of speech. Some libraries will also include words that have not made it into official dictionaries yet, such as an Ebonics library. Spell checkers can also be used for other languages, and multiple libraries can be used at the same time in some spell checker programs. Some spell checker programs also come with grammar checking capabilities, which can be equally as useful.
Risks:
Spell checkers are inherently rather risk free. They rely mostly on user input for choosing the correct replacement word. User error can play a big part in the failure of a spell checker application. Also, if a grammar function is used, please note that the corrections should not be taken as 'law', and should be verified against a known grammatical library.
