Domain Renewal

Domain Name Registration Article Details

If you already have registered some domain names, you will know that in order to maintain or 'own' exclusive rights to those domain names you will have to keep track of domain renewal for each and every single one of them. Domain names are only registered to you for a certain period of time (normally 1 to 10 years), and if you do not renew your domain, then they will expire and you lose the rights to their use.

Certain domain name registrars advertise domain renewal for up to 100 years, but this is a bit of a misnomer as it is really just renewing your domain for 10 years, 10 times to achieve that 100 years that they advertise the domain renewal for.

Having the choice though for extending your domain renewal out to the maximum time allowed isn’t a bad thing as you will earn 'points' in the eyes of Search Engines for the length of time that the domain name is renewed until. Websites come and go very rapidly, the more volatile ones that do not last long are the 'nigeria-investment-breast-enlargement-rolex-watch-viagra.com' ones. The domain owners for these types of domains are NOT interested in a domain renewal as they realize that they will have to close up shop and start up elsewhere on a new domain name otherwise they will get closed down or blacklisted. Having a domain name that is renewed for a long period shows the Search Engines that you intend to be around for a longer period of time, and hence your website will be taken more seriously by them.

So, what happens if I don't do my domain renewal in time or I simply forget about it (note that Ballistic Domains allows you to setup automatic domain renewal so that this doesn’t happen)? Do I lose my domain?

No Domain Renewal? - 3 Steps to losing your domain!

Step 1: If you don’t renew your domain and it expires or it lapses, do not give up hope. When your domain expires, it goes into what is called a 'Grace Period' with your domain registrar. This is a period that lasts between a couple of weeks up to a year depending on your registrar, and in that time you have the ability to possibly renew it.

Step 2: Following the 'Grace Period' you then enter a 'Redemption Period', where you have up to 30 days as a last chance to get it back. In this period, all of your registration information is removed from the domain name, but it is still not let go of. Paying a premium will get your domain name back during this time, but at least it will not get lost due to you not renewing.

Step 3: Following the 'Redemption Period', your domain name goes into ‘Pending Delete’ status for up to a week where you do not have the ability to renew it.

After this your domain is either put up for auction with the registrar, it becomes available for someone’s backorder domain name to take effect, or becomes available for someone else to purchase.

So what's the lesson to be learned when it comes to domain renewal?

Make sure your contact information and current email address is up to date with your domain registrar so that they can contact you when automatic domain renewal is due, and setup automatic renewal on all of your domains at Ballistic Domains!
